State overviews

City pages describe a local scene. State pages describe the things that are set above the city level and that genuinely differ between them — chiefly how venues are permitted to operate, and how far apart the metros are.

The venue question is the one that surprises people most. Across the US, the large majority of on-premise lifestyle venues operate as private membership clubs rather than as public bars, and a substantial share do not serve alcohol at all. That is usually a licensing consequence rather than a house preference: holding a liquor licence brings inspection and conduct requirements that sit awkwardly with a private adult venue, so many operators simply do not hold one. The result is the bring-your-own model that dominates in much of the country.

How strictly that plays out varies enormously. Some states are permissive enough that licensed venues are workable; others regulate alcohol in a way that makes commercial premises impractical, which pushes the entire scene toward private events. Rules are also set at county and city level as often as at state level, which is why two venues an hour apart can operate quite differently.

Distance is the other state-level fact. In Ohio, three metros sit within two hours of each other and couples treat all three as one calendar. In Texas or California the equivalent journey is half a day, and the practical unit of participation is the metro rather than the state. That difference shapes what a scene can sustain more than population does.

We only publish a state page where we cover two or more metros in it. A state overview that simply restated a single city page would be padding, and there is enough of that on this subject already.

One standing caveat: licensing changes, and it changes locally. Treat everything here as background rather than as a current legal position, and confirm anything that matters with the venue itself.
