New York City's scene is enormous but fragmented across many small semi-private groups. Long Island runs its own suburban scene oriented toward house parties. Upstate — Buffalo, Rochester, Albany, the Hudson Valley — is a series of small, largely private local scenes.
The gap between the city and everywhere else is larger than in any other state. Couples upstate often have more in common with those in Ohio or Michigan than with those in Manhattan.

Space and licensing both work against permanent venues in New York City, which is why so much runs through private events and hotel-based occasions. Upstate the constraint is population rather than regulation.

Manhattan to central Long Island is an hour or more depending on traffic. Buffalo to New York City is a full day's drive or a flight. Upstate couples generally look to Toronto, Cleveland or Pittsburgh before they look to their own state's largest city.
Outside the metros
Outside the metros the state is very thinly served, and the Hudson Valley and Finger Lakes have small, private local networks rather than anything organised.
The character of the scene here
The gap between New York City and the rest of the state is the largest internal contrast in the country. Upstate scenes have more in common with Ohio or western Pennsylvania than with anything downstate, in size, structure and pace.

In the city, expect a long entry — the scene is enormous but fragmented, and nothing about it is visible from outside. Upstate, expect a small scene reached by introduction. Both reward patience and neither rewards searching.
