The shape of the scene

Las Vegas is visitor-driven, fast and enormous during peak weekends, with a separate and quieter resident scene that most visitors never encounter. Reno is small, resident-driven and private, with essentially no visitor dimension.

The state's reputation for permissiveness leads people to expect more than the local scenes actually deliver day to day. The Vegas visitor scene is real; a walk-in, on-demand version of it is not.

Nevada's alcohol rules are unusually permissive, and licensed venues are more workable here than in most states. That does not mean adult venues are unregulated: local ordinances in Clark and Washoe counties still shape what is possible.

Distances and how people travel

Las Vegas to Reno is around seven hours — they are effectively unconnected. Las Vegas to Los Angeles is four hours and to Phoenix five, and both of those connections matter more than the in-state one.

Outside the metros

Outside the two metros, Nevada is very sparsely populated and has essentially no organised scene.

The character of the scene here

Nevada is two states as far as this is concerned. The Las Vegas visitor scene is real and unlike anywhere else in the country; the resident scenes in both metros are ordinary, private and largely uninterested in it.

If you are starting out

If you are visiting Las Vegas, plan around specific events rather than improvising — the options worth attending are not the ones advertised to tourists. If you live in either metro, ignore the visitor scene entirely.
