The lifestyle scene in 69 US cities

We do not list club names or addresses. Venues open and close, and a page claiming otherwise is usually out of date or making it up. What we describe instead is the shape of each scene: how big it is, where it clusters, when it is busiest and what newcomers tend to run into. A few patterns hold almost everywhere and are worth knowing before you read any individual page. Scenes cluster in suburbs rather than city centres, because private events need space and parking that dense neighbourhoods do not have. Metros with a large military presence — San Diego, Hampton Roads, San Antonio, Colorado Springs — run much stricter discretion norms, because exposure there ends careers rather than causing embarrassment. And scenes in cities with heavy tourism keep well away from the tourist districts, which is why looking in the obvious place is the reliable way to find nothing.

Size matters less than you would expect. Several of the metros here have scenes considerably larger than their population implies, usually because they act as a hub for a wide region — Atlanta for the Southeast, Denver for the Mountain West, Kansas City for the central Plains. Others are smaller than their size suggests because the local scene is private and reached only by introduction, which is common across the South and in New England.

Where you live also determines how much of your calendar is local. Couples in Ohio, Oklahoma or Connecticut routinely treat two or three metros as one set of options and drive accordingly. Couples in Texas or California generally do not, because the distances make it impractical.
