The shape of the scene

The state's scenes divide roughly into the Bay Area, the Los Angeles basin, San Diego and the inland and desert areas — and they overlap far less than the shared state suggests. A couple in Sacramento and a couple in Orange County have almost nothing in common in terms of what they can actually attend.

The Bay Area sits inside a broad non-monogamy culture where labels are used precisely and events are often mixed. Southern California is more conventionally couple-oriented, more presentation-conscious, and organised around driving distance above all else.

Venues, alcohol and why so many clubs are BYOB

California's approach means most on-premise adult venues operate as private membership clubs and a large share do not serve alcohol. Bring-your-own arrangements are common, and rules vary by city as much as by state. Local ordinances in individual cities can be considerably stricter than the statewide picture.

Distances and how people travel

Distance is the dominant fact. Los Angeles to San Diego is two hours without traffic and rather more with it; Los Angeles to the Bay Area is a flight or a six-hour drive. The practical unit of participation in California is the metro, not the state.

Outside the metros

The Central Valley and the far north are thinly served. Couples in Bakersfield, Fresno, Redding or the Sierra foothills generally travel to Sacramento or the Bay Area, and treat a two-hour drive as normal rather than exceptional.

The character of the scene here

California's scene has the longest continuous history of any in the country, and parts of it predate the internet by decades. That shows in the older private circuits, which still run on introductions and phone trees rather than platforms, alongside a newer layer that is entirely app-native.

If you are starting out

Pick your metro before you pick anything else, and be realistic about how far you will actually drive on a Friday. Couples who try to participate across two Californian metros generally end up participating properly in neither.
