The lifestyle in Tennessee
Tennessee is long, and its two main scenes sit three hours apart with quite different characters.
The shape of the scene
Nashville has grown fast and its scene is unusually open to newcomers as a result. Memphis is older, more private and pulls from three states. Knoxville and Chattanooga have smaller local networks that look toward Atlanta and Asheville.
The whole state operates within the orbit of Atlanta, which is four hours from Nashville and six from Memphis and hosts the larger regional events.
Venues, alcohol and why so many clubs are BYOB
Tennessee venues generally operate as private membership clubs. Local rules vary between municipalities, and some counties in the state remain dry, which affects what is possible outside the metros.
Why this pattern exists across the whole country is covered in the legal questions couples ask.
Licensing rules change and vary by county and city. Treat anything you read online — here included — as background, and confirm the current position with the venue before you go.

Nashville to Memphis is around three hours, Nashville to Knoxville under three, Nashville to Atlanta four. Couples use all of those routes for events.
Outside the metros
Rural Tennessee is thinly served and discretion concerns are high. Most couples travel to one of the metros.
The character of the scene here
Tennessee's two main scenes have moved in opposite directions. Nashville has become considerably more open as the city has filled with new arrivals; Memphis has stayed private and introduction-based, in the way it has been for decades.
If you are starting out
Nashville is much the easier place to start, and a fair number of couples elsewhere in the state use it. Expect a slower and more carefully vetted entry anywhere else.
None of that is specific to this state: talk to each other first, meet people online, meet in public, and consider an event only after that. The order is covered in how to find people, and the practical rules are on our safety page.
Tennessee questions
Is swinging legal in Tennessee?
Consensual sex between adults in private is legal across the US. What varies is the regulation around venues — licensing, zoning, alcohol and public-conduct rules — which is why clubs generally operate as private members' clubs. See our guide to the legal questions couples ask.
Which Tennessee city has the biggest scene?
Nashville, and it is growing faster than Memphis.
Do we need to join a club to get started?
No. Most couples spend months meeting people online and at public socials before they set foot in a venue, and some never do.
