Northern Virginia functions as part of the Washington scene rather than as its own. Richmond sits in the middle and links both directions. Hampton Roads is the most military-shaped scene in the country.

Distances and how people travel

Northern Virginia to Richmond is around two hours, Richmond to Virginia Beach ninety minutes. The whole corridor is used, and couples routinely attend events in more than one part of it.

Outside the metros

The Shenandoah Valley, southwest Virginia and the Eastern Shore are thinly served. Couples there generally travel to Richmond, Roanoke or across to Tennessee.

The character of the scene here

Virginia's defining feature is employment. Government, military and cleared contracting between them account for a very large share of the state's scene, and every norm here follows from that — no photographs, no names, no questions about work.

Expect verification requests and expect people to decline to discuss what they do. Neither is unfriendliness, and taking offence at it marks you out immediately.
