The lifestyle in Wisconsin
Wisconsin's scene is small in absolute terms but well connected to two much larger ones on either side.
The shape of the scene
Milwaukee is relaxed and sociable, with a lot of the calendar running through regular social nights rather than dedicated venues. Madison is smaller but unusually open, with strong overlap into the wider non-monogamy community.
Both sit within ninety minutes of each other and within two hours of Chicago, and couples move freely across all three. The effective calendar is considerably larger than the state's own.
Venues, alcohol and why so many clubs are BYOB
Wisconsin's licensing is comparatively relaxed and its bar culture is central to local social life, which is one reason so much of the scene here runs through ordinary licensed venues rather than dedicated adult premises.
Why this pattern exists across the whole country is covered in the legal questions couples ask.
Licensing rules change and vary by county and city. Treat anything you read online — here included — as background, and confirm the current position with the venue before you go.

Milwaukee to Madison is eighty minutes, Milwaukee to Chicago ninety, Madison to Chicago two and a half hours. Minneapolis is around five from Milwaukee.
Outside the metros
Green Bay, Appleton and the north have small local networks. The Dells and the northern lakes draw seasonal activity in summer.
The character of the scene here
Wisconsin's bar culture shapes the scene more than licensing does. A large share of the calendar runs through social nights in ordinary licensed venues, which makes the entry point unusually low-pressure compared with states built around dedicated premises.
If you are starting out
Treat Milwaukee, Madison and Chicago as one calendar from the start. Almost everyone active in Wisconsin does, and the ninety-minute drives are considered routine.
None of that is specific to this state: talk to each other first, meet people online, meet in public, and consider an event only after that. The order is covered in how to find people, and the practical rules are on our safety page.
Wisconsin questions
Is swinging legal in Wisconsin?
Consensual sex between adults in private is legal across the US. What varies is the regulation around venues — licensing, zoning, alcohol and public-conduct rules — which is why clubs generally operate as private members' clubs. See our guide to the legal questions couples ask.
Which Wisconsin city has the biggest scene?
Milwaukee is larger; Madison is more open in culture. Both rely on Chicago for scale.
Do we need to join a club to get started?
No. Most couples spend months meeting people online and at public socials before they set foot in a venue, and some never do.
