Austin's scene skews younger and more openly non-monogamous than the rest of Texas, and it has grown as fast as the city has.
What the scene here is like
Austin behaves less like a Texas city and more like Portland or Denver in this respect: the local culture is relaxed about alternative relationships, and a lot of the scene sits inside a broader non-monogamy community rather than apart from it.
That means terminology matters. People here are more likely to describe themselves as ethically non-monogamous than as swingers, and events are often mixed rather than strictly couples-and-couples.
Where things actually happen
Activity concentrates east and south of the river, where the housing stock and the social geography both suit private events. Downtown and the entertainment districts host public socials but very little else.
The metro has grown faster than its road network, and cross-town journeys at peak are genuinely bad. Suburban events in Round Rock, Cedar Park and the south-west edge draw people who will not fight through the centre.
Timing, seasons and travel
Heat from June to September pushes everything indoors and thins the summer calendar. The pleasant months are October through May, and the big festival weekends distort accommodation and crowd composition considerably.
