New Orleans has a reputation in the lifestyle that rests largely on a handful of enormous annual event weekends rather than on its weekly calendar.
What the scene here is like
The city hosts some of the best-known lifestyle convention weekends in the country, and for a few weeks each year the scene here is among the largest anywhere. Outside those weeks it reverts to a modest local scene.
Locals and visitors experience two different cities. The resident scene is smaller, more private and mostly happens away from the Quarter, and locals are often ambivalent about the convention crowd.
Where things actually happen
Visitor activity concentrates in the Quarter and the CBD hotels. Local activity sits Uptown, in Mid-City and across the lake in the northern suburbs.
The city is compact but parking and one-way streets make short journeys slow. Crossing the lake adds a bridge and half an hour, which separates the two circuits socially.
Timing, seasons and travel
Distinctly seasonal. The convention weekends and the cooler months from October to April carry the calendar. Summer is brutally humid and quiet, and hurricane season can clear a weekend at short notice.
