New York has the deepest and most varied scene in the country, which is a mixed blessing: there is more of everything, and no obvious front door.
What the scene here is like
The scene here is unusually varied — venues and private groups differ enormously in age range, dress code and formality, and couples often try several before finding one that suits them. That variety is the main reason newcomers find New York confusing rather than easy.
Because the population is so large, sub-scenes stay viable here that would not survive in a smaller metro: age-specific groups, groups organised around a single borough, groups that overlap heavily with the kink or polyamory communities. Very little of that is visible from the outside.
Where things actually happen
Manhattan hosts most of the events people have heard of, but a significant share of activity happens in Brooklyn and Queens, and in New Jersey and Westchester for anything needing a large private space. Rents make dedicated venues difficult inside the city, which pushes bigger events either into hotels or across the river.
Subway access shapes attendance more than distance does. An event two miles away that needs a transfer and a walk will lose people to one five miles away on a single line, and organisers know it — which is why so much clusters near a handful of stations.
Timing, seasons and travel
Summer thins out noticeably as people leave the city at weekends, and the calendar picks up sharply from September. Winter is busier than newcomers expect, because indoor events are the point. Holiday weekends are a poor time to try anything new here, since the regulars are away and the rooms fill with visitors.
