Resorts and lifestyle travel

Lifestyle travel is a substantial part of the scene, and for many couples it is where they feel most comfortable.

Two different models

Dedicated resorts are lifestyle properties year-round. Everyone there knows what kind of place it is, which removes the effort of managing two audiences.

Takeovers are ordinary hotels booked out entirely by a lifestyle group for a set week. The venue is normal, the guests are not.

Both usually run all-inclusive, with entertainment, themed evenings and organised social events.

Why couples find it easier

An evening at a club compresses everything into a few hours. A week does the opposite.

You arrive, have dinner, go to bed. The next day you sit by the pool and talk to people. By the third day you know faces and names. Nothing has to happen on any particular night, and often nothing does for the first half of the trip.

That slower pace suits a lot of couples far better than a single evening where the clock is running.

What to check before booking

• Couples-only or singles allowed — this changes the atmosphere significantly
• Clothing rules by area — most have distinct zones with different expectations
• What is actually included — some charge separately for events
• Cancellation terms — lifestyle bookings are often less flexible

Practical points

Passports, travel insurance and the usual apply. Discretion is standard at these properties, but photography rules are strict — same as clubs, and enforced.

Agree your boundaries before you travel. A week is long, the atmosphere is relaxed, and it is easier to drift past an unspoken line when you are five days in and nobody is watching the clock.

Why travel changes the experience

A club night lasts four hours and you can leave. A week-long resort does not offer that, and the difference is larger than it sounds.

Couples consistently report that the intensity of a full week — the same people, all day, every day, with drink available continuously — magnifies whatever was already true about their agreement. Couples with solid agreements have a good week. Couples with vague ones do not.

Practical planning

• Book a room you can retreat to. Having somewhere to go alone is not optional on a week-long trip.
• Agree the week in advance, including what happens if one of you wants to stop on day two.
• Check the actual policy. “Clothing optional”, “lifestyle friendly” and “lifestyle” describe different things.
• Understand local law. What is normal on the property may not be legal off it, and that is your problem rather than the resort's.
• Plan the money. These trips are not cheap, and financial stress compounds everything else.

First trip advice

Most experienced couples suggest a long weekend or a convention before committing to a week abroad, and suggest not making a first lifestyle experience an international one. The failure mode of a bad first night at home is an early taxi. The failure mode of a bad second day of a seven-day trip is considerably worse.
