Swinger symbols and signals
Most of the symbols people ask about are more folklore than signal. Here is what each one supposedly means, and how much weight to put on any of it.
Search interest in this is enormous, largely because of social media, and the reality is less exciting than the myth. Almost none of these are reliable signals, and treating them as such is how people end up in embarrassing conversations.
The upside-down pineapple
The best-known of them. The claim is that an inverted pineapple — on a shirt, a door, a shopping trolley or a cruise cabin — signals lifestyle participation.
There is something to this in specific settings, particularly on cruises and at lifestyle-oriented resorts, where it has been used deliberately as an in-group nod. Outside those settings it is essentially meaningless. Pineapples are a common decorative motif with a long history as a symbol of hospitality, and the overwhelming majority of them signify nothing at all.

Two reasons. The first is that a genuinely stigmatised community has real use for discreet recognition, so some signalling does exist. The second is that this makes excellent social media content, and a claim about a secret symbol spreads faster than a correction to it.
The result is a mixture of a small amount of genuine practice and a large amount of invention, presented indistinguishably.
How people actually recognise each other
The unglamorous truth is that they do not, in ordinary life. Recognition happens on platforms, at events and through mutual acquaintances. Nobody serious is relying on a doorstep ornament.
At events, the useful signals are conversational rather than symbolic — how people describe what they are looking for, whether they are specific about limits, and whether they talk about their partner as a participant.
Do not approach strangers on the basis of a symbol. Even where the signal is real, the false positive rate is enormous, and the cost of getting it wrong falls entirely on you.
