A first threesome: the practical version
For a lot of couples this is the entry point rather than a club night. The arrangements that go well are the ones that were boring to set up.
A threesome is the most commonly considered version of this, and the one most likely to be attempted without any preparation at all. That combination is why it produces so many accounts of regret.
The dynamics, briefly
| Arrangement | What tends to come up |
|---|---|
| Couple plus a woman | The most sought-after and the hardest to arrange. Covered in our unicorn hunting guide. |
| Couple plus a man | Easier to arrange by a wide margin. Vetting matters more, since single men are less filtered. |
| Three friends | The version most likely to damage an existing friendship. Think hard about the aftermath. |
| Two couples splitting | Technically a foursome, but it often begins as a threesome in practice. |
What to agree beforehand
- What is in scope and what is not, stated specifically rather than as a label.
- Whether anything happens between the two of you and the third person separately. This is the most common unexamined question.
- Protection, explicitly, and what the answer is if someone suggests otherwise in the moment.
- How it ends. A signal, and an unconditional right to use it.
- Whether there is a next time, and who decides.
- What the third person has been told, and whether it is accurate.
The third person is a person
The most consistent complaint from people who have been the third in someone else's threesome is being treated as equipment — invited in, used, and then dropped without a word once the couple had what they wanted.
That is avoidable with very little effort. Talk to them beforehand, meet them somewhere neutral, be honest about whether this is a one-off, and send a message afterwards. None of that is difficult.

- Not talking about it first, because talking about it felt unromantic. This is the main one.
- Two against one. Attention that stays entirely between the couple leaves the third person as a spectator.
- One against two. The reverse — the couple's own connection disappearing entirely — is the version that produces jealousy afterwards.
- Drinking to manage nerves. The most reliable predictor of a night someone regrets.
- Doing it with a friend without considering Monday. The friendship is the thing at risk, and it usually is not recoverable if it goes badly.
- Assuming it will be repeated. Any of the three people can decide once was enough.
Afterwards
Talk to each other the next day, unhurried, and be honest rather than diplomatic. The most common report is that the physical part was straightforward and the feelings afterwards were the interesting bit — which is exactly the reverse of what people expect beforehand.
A delayed emotional dip a day or two later is common and does not mean something went wrong. More in checking in afterwards.
If either of you is agreeing to this as a gift to the other, stop. The recipient of that gift almost always ends up dealing with the consequences of it.

What should we agree before a threesome?
Specifically what is in scope, whether anything happens separately, protection, how it ends, and what the third person has been told. Vague agreements are what produce regret afterwards.
Is it a bad idea with a friend?
It carries the highest risk to something you already value. Consider honestly whether the friendship survives an awkward version, because that is the realistic downside.
What if it was awkward?
That is extremely common and not a verdict on anything. Most first attempts are clumsy, and the couples who describe it well are usually describing their third or fourth.
